Game History: Luffy spent a great deal of his time in Crystallis trying to find his way out, yearning to return to his journey and his life ambition of becoming the Pirate King. Stubbornly, the former pirate denied being a hero with every fiber of his being. This did not stop him from fighting against the Empire, which resulted in his being imprisoned. Watching his close friends and crew members die in front of him, while suffering experimentation, caused the usually energetic and outgoing young King-to-be to revert into himself. While the effects of such experiences were damaging, they were not long lasting. During his last few weeks in Crystallis, Luffy was able to finally retrieve a boat and set to the open waters to restore some sort of normalcy to his previous life as a pirate on the Grand Line. Accompanied by his moogle Pakku, and a number of other compassionate friends, the pirate was last seen deporting from Aquares Ixen to never be seen again.

Personality:
The two most dominant traits that Luffy displays are his apparent lack of intelligence and his utter fearlessness. Whenever the crew approaches a new island, as seen in the Little Garden arc, Luffy is almost always the first person to leap off of the boat to go looking for adventure, regardless of whether or not the unknown destination could be dangerous. He often has a knack for choosing paths or locations that look noticeably treacherous or dangerous, if only because he holds no real fear of things as long as there is an adventure to be had. In fact, the only thing Luffy truly fears in life is his Grandfather, who easily makes him quiver and go wide-eyed, as seen during the aftermath of the Enies Lobby arc where his Grandfather Garp appears to scold him for becoming a pirate. Though his true fearlessness is shown very early in the series. When captured by his rival Buggy the Pirate, Luffy is put onto the very execution stand where his idol Gold Roger, the famous pirate, had been beheaded. Literally seconds from having his head cutoff, the only thing Luffy could do was smile and say aloud, “It’s been fun. Looks like this is the end for me.” He is very aware of the dangers that come with being a pirate, but he has resolved since a very young age that as long as he is following his dreams and the promise that he made to the pirate Red-Haired Shanks that even if he dies, it would be worth it.

Luffy is very easily astounded by the simplest of things, such as hermit crabs making his eyes light up in bewilderment, yet he can be confused by concepts such as that by digging a hole right next to another he may be unintentionally filling the other hole, which happened during his aide in helping Korza’s Father in the Alabasta arc dig for a water source. Also, larger concepts, such as when Nami or Chopper try to explain something scientific to him, he will instantly call their explanations a mystery, such as how the weather works while they sail on the Grand Line. Luffy likes monsters and will ask weird creatures to join his crew, as seen during the Triller Bark arc (say that three times fast) when he asks a talking tree to join his band of pirates. He also has no knowledge of medicine or most common practices. When Nami had a high fever at the start of the Drum Island arc, Luffy told her to eat cold food since she was overheating, and later tried to make Zoro feel better after haven’t lost against battling an enemy pirate named Bartholomew Kuma by pouring sake onto him because Zoro likes sake.

When attempting to think up a plan to get off of an unknown island in the Amazon Lily arc, Luffy managed to make some logical sense of where to look for a means of escape, but he is seen as overstraining himself and notes that he is going to feel sick from too much thinking. Typically if Luffy finds something he does not understand, even if someone explains in detail, he ends up calling it a "mystery thing"; like calling the Dance Powder they discovered during the Alabasta arc a "mystery powder". Luffy also has shown a very slow reaction time to certain things, especially when the obvious is pointed out or someone remarks on the way he is doing something.

When Luffy’s crew first arrived on Drum Island, Vivi remarked at how cold it was and that Luffy should wear something more than a vest and shorts. After a few moments pause, Luffy finally realized it actually was cold and remarked at how he needed to be wearing more clothing. He is, however, a genius when it comes to fighting. It has been stated more than once by characters in the series that Luffy's instinct and behavior are similar to that of a wild animal. He seems to know just who to fight before he even gets to the battle, as if being able to sense the alpha out of a cornucopia of goons. Most of his fights, though drawn out to matches of power, are won by his instincts, reactions, and counter attacks. This also compliments the way he looks at the world.

Luffy is most often seen smiling, save for a few fights where he is forced to use the sum of his powers, and even then he will flash a grin. He’s also been shown to be resourceful during combat, discovering new methods of his Devil’s Fruit power as well as using things around him to try and gain an upper hand. During the Arlong Park fight with Arlong the sharkman, Luffy uses the discarded teeth removed from Arlong’s mouth and puts them in his mouth, so that he can bite like a fishman as well. He also views the world in such a straightforward and simplistic manner. Often, Luffy is the only person in the series who can see past events that have taken place and realize what the true goal overall is. His brilliance in fighting has afforded him victory over many difficult opponents. When fighting Crocodile towards the end of the Alabasta arc, he realizes that due to Crocodile’s power being based on sand, he uses water and sprays it on his fists so that Crocodile’s sand hardens enough for Luffy to damage him. Yet outside of battle, such thinking is amiss for him.

Luffy isn’t usually bitter, but he does have a habit of holding a grudge against those who have wronged him gravely, even in dire situations. He refuses to let Crocodile help him escape from the prison Impel Down even after he had no choice to do so. Even though he seldom forgets a strike made against him, Luffy tries not to hurt any innocent people and those he gains a fondness for, even if they themselves intend to do harm to him. During an interview with the series creator, Oda was noted as saying that he tries to make Luffy very straightforward about what he wants to be and how he is feeling, which is why out of all the main characters in the series he has the least number of “thought bubbles” or contemplative moments since he acts and says what he wants to do rather than bothering with thinking of it. This lack of thinking causes Luffy to be rather naïve at times.

Luffy has a knack for identifying similarities on things that have very little resemblance to one another, such as being able to see the resemblance between his cook Sanji and the poorly drawn Wanted Poster that looks nothing like him. Yet, Luffy is unable to see similarities with things with obvious connections, such as being unable to tell that Sogeking is actually Usopp in a costume during the Water 7 arc. Luffy also shows significant leadership skills, which at other times he usually lacks and therefore has his captain duties done by another crew member, such as Nami. Most examples of his leadership are usually seen at the most dire and serious of times in the series. In the Water 7 arc, in which a portion of the Straw Hats crew, some of the Galley-La foremen, and the Franky Family crew are about to face off against one another, Luffy brings the three groups together by presenting the fact that they now have a common enemy and should form an alliance to take back what CP9 and the government had robbed from them.

His crew members also listen to his orders without question when he is being serious, all respecting his position and following through with their instructions. In the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, a rival pirated named Jewelry Bonney remarks on how after fighting Zoro that not just anyone could order him around, since Zoro seemed to be so ruthless and independent, but he listens and respects to Luffy’s commands without restraint or question. Though he is normally very poor when it comes to manners, Luffy knows what true honor and respect are. This is shown by how he does not allow someone or something to get involved in another person's fight, unless it is an absolute emergency. At these times, Luffy shows both remarkable restraint during these battles, yet he becomes enrage when something or someone outside the battle tries to intervene or get involved, especially if it is a person he considers a friend is in the battle or struggle. Luffy showed this early in the series when Zoro was fighting the man he aspired to defeat, Hawk-Eyes Mihawk. He managed to hold himself, as well as Johnny and Yosaku back until Zoro was absolutely defeated. Since then he has shown it several times, such as when the Baroque Works crew members sabotaged the giants' duel on Little Garden when they had been fighting so honorably for many years, and also when Wapol tried to destroy Chopper’s pirate flag simply because it was an eyesore. Luffy leapt up and protected the flag because he knew of its importance not only because he is a pirate, but because of hearing Chopper’s plight with whom the flag originally belonged to.

Luffy also has a personality that is akin to that of a child's, in the sense that he often goes to the extreme side of things with reactions. He can either be extremely greedy, especially in cases of food, who he wishes to bring onto his crew and those who are already a part of his crew, and adventure. Or he has an extraordinarily selfless attitude, going so far as to sacrifice himself to avenge or protect his friends, his crew, and his family. During the middle of the Drum Island arc, he climbs up the side of a vertical mountain with both Nami and Sanji on his back, almost ruining his hands permanently, but he continues to push on because of their importance to him. Luffy’s extreme thirst for adventure is the main reason he wants to become the Pirate King, having the belief that the Pirate King would be the one on the entire ocean with the most freedom for adventuring. Because of this adventurous nature, he tends to avoid taking 'the easy way out' of situations, such as when he destroyed the Eternal Pose to Nanimoai Island given to him by Robin, stating that he did not want an enemy to decide what his destination would be. He also has no intention of trying to learn what or where One Piece actually is until he finds it himself, and once stated he would quit being a pirate if his crew tried to find out, not wanting to “go on a boring adventure”.

Luffy is also quite a glutton despite his skinny appearance. He loves meat and can eat a most things whole, especially fish; bones included. Because of this, a running gag of Luffy's is him constantly stealing other peoples' food with his rubber powers, causing them to yell at him and sometimes hit him in retaliation. It should also be noted that he becomes more gluttonous over the series as there are moments he becomes morbidly obese, though he loses the weight in some way, usually due to exercise through fighting. His desire to eat often stems for his need of energy, as he exerts quite a large amount of it during combat. He’ll eat most anything once, but he rarely enjoys eating most vegetables unless they are cooked by Sanji. Another running gag is his habit of being amazed at various abilities of villains, often yelling out "AWESOME" with stars in his eyes and around his head due to being overly fascinated with what he sees. Luffy also seems to have a slight obsession when it comes to outfitting himself with full-body armors, and has a habit of wearing one whenever he finds the chance, as if doing so will make him become a knight or even a robot.

Luffy is also known for constantly insulting his opponents or rivals by giving them degrading nicknames, such as calling Enel “earlobes” during his fight with him in the Skypiea arc. He apparently lacks any remote skill with insulting people, usually taking either a physical aspect or ability and turning it to make it degrading, such as calling Zoro "three-swords style" when everyone was lamenting Vivi's absence at the end of the Alabasta arc due to his instructing the crew to get over her staying behind, only to be corrected by Usopp which in turn made Luffy insult Zoro further by calling him “two-sword style”. Luffy also has absolutely no talent for lying whatsoever, unlike his Sharpshooter Usopp. More often than not, Luffy has blurted out, without thinking of course, what he knows regarding a certain event whenever someone asks something concerning the events that transpired. Luffy never kills any of the villains or rivals he faces. Instead, he frequently sends the villain flying off into the distance, knocking them out or beating them until the point that they are almost near death. This shows that Luffy has some sense of compassion, but more that he has a sense of justice. He feels that punishing the villains for their crimes if far worse than death, killing the villains lets them off too easily, whereas he considers letting them live to see their dreams ruined a far more fitting punishment. Ironically though, some of the people he has defeated have become good after their defeat, most noticeably Wapol, the villain of the Drum Island arc, becoming a rich CEO of a toy factory after his fight with Luffy.

Another dominant trait of Luffy is his humble nature. He is seldom one to brag about the powerful foes he's fought against in the past, though he's not above claiming that no one has ever beaten him in the past. He somehow remains humble despite having done incredible acts like defeating Shichibukai-level pirates and issuing the order to burn down the World Government Flag during the Enies Lobby, effectively declaring war on the World Government without batting an eye. When Franky pointed out the latter, Luffy only replied that it was nothing to get worked up over. Despite his passion for fighting, Luffy also generally refuses to fight someone that he does not personally hold a grudge against or consider an enemy, preferring to either talk it over or run away from the confrontation. Over the series Luffy has become more mature and levelheaded with such encounters, though he only shows this part of his personality when he and his friends are in dire situations or someone insults him, calling people like him and their beliefs foolish. He almost never gets irritated with normal people, though there are a few exceptions, like when they seem to have an opposite taste in food as he.

Luffy also has no problem with other people stretching and playing with his rubber body, however, he does get a little irritated if they are doing so while he's in the middle of eating, much like an animal. Luffy's interest in women has been and continues to be a complex matter. He appears to have little or no romantic interests in women, having nonchalantly refused the proposals made to him by Lola and Hancock during the Amazon Lily arc without a second thought. Ironically, despite his lack of interest in women, he has attracted several along his travels such as Alvida, Boa Hancock, and the affections by the women of Amazon Lily, but this is due mostly to his overwhelming willpower and strength. Luffy is very loyal to his crew-mates and other friends, and can lose his temper quickly if they are harmed in any way (a trait that he apparently shares with the the Pirate King Gol Roger as seen in various flash backs).

Luffy is willing to do drastic things to avenge and defend those dear to him, even if it means breaking a promise to his friends, such as striking the pirate Bellamy down for attacking Montblanc Cricket’s crew even after promising Nami he wouldn’t get in any fights during their time in Jaya. He even ended up punching World Noble Saint Charloss in the face for shooting his fishman friend Hatchan, despite promising not to defy the World Nobles in the Shabody Arc. Additionally, Luffy believes that all people should be loyal to their friends, and if Luffy sees anyone betraying their own comrades, he would stand up for the victims (even if they are enemies). Luffy has gained a reputation for being extremely reckless, and in some cases, insane. However unlike other pirates who gained a reputation for being psychotic (like the Marine-killer Caribou, or Bellamy) through needless and random acts of violence against civilians or the authorities, Luffy's reputation comes from him trying to help or save others, especially in the face of authority (though he does tend to go overboard).

Luffy has shown to admire heroes, though has stated vehemently that he really does not want to be one, his reasoning more-or-less translating that the definition of a good hero is to be entirely selfless. Ironically, many of Luffy's actions are mostly selfless, with his selfishness mainly revolving around his gluttony and his thirst for adventure. This trait leaves everyone he meets with to think he is some kind of hero, but not by his own design. However, he is easily convinced by Jinbe for his plan of becoming a hero of the Fishman Island with an agreement of meat to be given to him when the “job was done”. However, despite all his peculiar traits and habits, Luffy's most defining part of his personality is the ability to make allies out of absolutely anyone (including former enemies, villains and even Whitebeard the pirate himself), which is said by Hawkeyes Mihawk during the Battle at Marineford to be the most dangerous ability in the world. When other individuals heard Luffy mention that he, his crew, and the people they meet are friends or comrades, it touched the hearts of others who were later grateful to Luffy and his crew and support them, like Carue, Vivi, and her father Nefertari Cobra during the Alabasta arc. This also applies to Nami and Chopper who later joined the Straw Hat Pirates due to Luffy’s acts of loyalty and selflessness.

As far as his time in Melodies has affected him, it certainly has made him a great deal more patient in regards to getting back to his journey on the Grand Line. It has helped shape him and enforce the reality of mortality. While he doesn't fear death, it has certainly made him think a great deal more about his actions. Due to his time in imprisonment, compounded with the experience of watching his brother die, he holds a greater importance over life than he had previously. He isn't so reckless or haphazard with his safety, but it does not stop him from jumping into situations he might find exciting or adventurous. He'll be the first to take a bullet for a friend, but only because he believes in himself enough to know that it would take more than a bullet to stop him. He's also become a bit more reserved in conscripting people onto his crew, and instead has learned from his time in Crystallis that no one can be replaced due to a new location or world. While his crew-mates in Crystallis will always be a part of his crew, Luffy is now more concerned with having adventures and looking for a way to eventually return home.. when the time is right of course.
